Turning vegan and the Deliciously Ella book

Organic vegetables from my allotment
Hey guys!

Sorry it's been so long! I've had a lovely long break from blogging and writing.

Okay, so where have I been?

I've been on an exciting journey. 6 months ago I turned vegan, this is something I thought about doing in the past for ethical reasons. Last year I watched a programme/film on Netflix called Vegucated. I didn't intend to watch it and make any changes to my diet, I wanted to watch it to become more educated. I've never been much of a meat eater as I eat organically. Organic meat is very expensive so I would limit myself to the occasional naughty bacon sandwich, Spaghetti Bolognese or wild Alaskan salmon. I was quite a big dairy fan though, eating a lot cheese. In fact I didn't realise just how much cheese I used to have until I gave it up.

Vegucated was quite graphic and there were bits that made me cry. I tried turning vegetarian back in 2008 when I watched a programme called Kill It, Cook It, Eat It, this was due to pure shock value. My past vegetarian experience didn't last long, only a couple of weeks or so, it can be easy to forget what you've seen. When you're presented with cooked meat on a plate you don't often think about how it got there however, this time was different, I spoke to my partner whom watched the programme with me and we both agreed to turn vegan. Doing it together with my partner gave me the will power not to give up. We were absolutely shocked by the dairy industry and thought no harm would come to the cows (so not true) - I won't go on, watch it for yourself.

So what did we do to start this vegan journey?

Week 1 - we eliminated all meat and dairy and gave exisitng animal based products to family.
Week 2 - we did our first 100% vegan food shop after spending time researching the different alternatives.
Week 3 - we researched what vitamins we could lack going vegan and which foods would provide these, we also looked into vegan supplements for certain vitamins such as K-2.

Giving up cheese, pizza and bacon (all organic of course) was the biggest difficulty.

After several weeks the cravings passed and I had help from Deliciously Ella recipes. I later discovered a vegan shop and restaurant in my home town of Birmingham.

Benefits  I've experienced of turning vegan
  • Weight loss - 6 months on I've lost a total of 17 pounds, not that I needed to lose weight but I look healthier for it. I've noticed a huge difference in the appearance of my face and also around my abdomen area.
  • Healthier - I feel like I have so much more energy and I don't feel sluggish. I also feel much purer in myself. The diet I now have is 100% plant based.
  • Great looking skin - I've noticed a new clarity in my skin and it looks and feels better, it must be because I'm eating so pure.
  • Better digestion - have you ever felt tired and sluggish after a large meal (especially containing meat)? Well I rarely get this feeling now. I have also given up gluten too so this probably helps.
  • Cooking from the raw - I didn't used to eat much processed foods but now being vegan everything I eat is cooked from scratch and I'm eating so much fresh vegetables and whole foods. I love cooking from the raw, you can see everything that has gone into a meal.
Disadvantages I've experienced of turning vegan
  • Cravings - in the first couple of weeks to a month it was really difficult with cravings. I had cravings for cheese and pizza. I thought the cravings would never end.
  • Eating out - whether it be with friends, family or work colleagues eating out when vegan is incredibly difficult, ingredients derived from animals are hidden in so many foods you wouldn't expect. Asking waiters and reading menus for something that is vegan can be somewhat tedious.
  • Label reading - at first a trip to the grocery store took much longer as we had to read ingredients lists to see whether produce contained any animal based ingredients such as milk or egg (even many gluten free breads contain eggs). Label reading takes time and patience. Even a trip to the free from section which you may expect to be vegan is very difficult.
  • Negative comments and ignorance - I have found when telling people I am vegan the odd few look at me like there is something wrong with me and many people can't seem to understand my reasons. Some family members of mine in particular kept moaning at me and have been really unsupportive. This is probably one of my biggest bugbears about turning vegan  - the lack of support and understanding from others.
Okay What do I eat now?

I eat a lot of fresh organic vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, oils (such as coconut oil), whole grains (such as brown rice and quinoa) and beans and pulses.

I don't consume any animal produce such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and honey or anything containing these.

Black and Kidney Bean Chilli from Deliciously Ella book
The Deliciously Ella book and Deliciously Ella blog (click for links) has been a god send and helped me the most. This is not a diet, it's a lifestyle choice. The thing I love about Deliciously Ella the most is that many of her recipes are quick, easy to do and many of the ingredients are easily obtainable from your local supermarket or healthfood store. I can't thank Ella enough for helping me on this journey. My ultimate favourite recipe is Ella's Sweet Potato, Lentil and Coconut Curry. It is so warm and comforting through the winter months. I love cooking and trying new things so I've been experimenting with the recipes in Deliciously Ella's book - no wonder the book is so popular as it is good wholesome food.

Mexican Bowl from Deliciously Ella book
One thing I've realise about being vegan, it doesn't necessary mean eating healthier. There are lots of unhealthy processed foods out there and I see why some vegans do not shed or lose any weight. There's lots of temptation and many sugary vegan snacks available such as chocolate. I myself have taken a different approach and I think that's why I've lost so much weight.

It's been an education and now being vegan has just become a normal part of my life and I have decided there is no going back.

What is your opinion on veganism? Have you ever tried it? Are you considering it?

AEOS Skincare Review

Background info

So I'm back, after a couple of months of not blogging with this review of AEOS products.
Back in 2012 I tried travel sizes of some AEOS products. You can read more about the brand and my review here.

Feeling so impressed from trying the trial sizes I wanted to try the full sizes to see their long results.

This article is a review on the following AEOS products:

  • Gentle Cleansing Lotion (Pink)
  • Dew Facial Wash
  • Realive Serum
  • Enriching Moisturiser (Pink)

Product descriptions

Gentle Cleansing Lotion (Pink)

A gentle cleanser containing a blend of organic and biodynamic essential oils, plant extracts and the energies of gems and crystals to assist in the removal of make-up and impurities whilst helping to maintain the delicate moisture balance of the skin. Application with water stimulates the active ingredients from plant extracts and fruit oils.

Pink is the colour of kindness, caring and warmth, and helps to inspire a little more loving and caring towards yourself. AEOS Gentle Cleansing Lotion Pink may assist in encouraging and replenishing these pink qualities.

Dew Facial Wash

A gentle and mild cleansing wash containing a blend of organic and biodynamic essential oils, plant extracts and the energies of gems and crystals that helps to relax the skin for easier absorption of the plant extracts, whilst conditioning and hydrating oils from neroli, lemon and honey gently refresh your complexion.

Realive Serum

A luxurious and intensive serum containing a blend of organic and biodynamic essential oils, plant extracts and the energies of gems and crystals that provide a multi-layered delivery of both hydration and moisture.

The key active ingredient is hyaluronic acid. This naturally derived ingredient may assist with smoothing wrinkles and plumping the skin. Coupled with essential oils of lavender, rose and rose geranium makes this an ideal serum to help minimise the signs of ageing and encourage a radiant complexion.

Due to its nourishing properties this product may also be used around the delicate eye area to help with any fine lines that are present or developing.

Enriching Moisturiser (Pink)

A blend of organic and biodynamic essential oils, plant extracts and the energies of gems and crystals - this is the final step of the AEOS Skincare Sequence to seal in all the positive benefits of hydration and penetrative moisturisation from the previous products. This light non-greasy moisturiser is absorbed quickly to help protect and hydrate the skin. Particularly beneficial for environmentally damaged, tired skin or if you are exposed to air-conditioned environments.

Pink is the colour of kindness, caring and warmth, and helps to inspire a little more loving and caring towards yourself. AEOS Enriching Moisturiser Pink may assist in encouraging and replenishing these pink qualities.

Packaging

Each AEOS product mentioned in this article has beautiful glass and silver packaging with the exception of the Gentle Cleansing Lotion (Pink) which has a squeezy plastic container, so the cleansing lotion can be dispensed easily. The packaging is highly luxurious and really does look good and high end.

Results and review

Gentle Cleansing Lotion (Pink)

This gorgeous silky cleansing lotion is deeply hydrating and when using it I love to apply to wet skin and gently massage it in. When applied to wet/damp skin this cleansing lotion gives a lovely 'slip' which allows you to perform a massage. It smells pretty floral and has lots of notes from rose, chamomile and rose geranium. I would say this is for those with sensitive and dry skin types. Being water soluble it washes away easily and is great to use with a muslin cloth. I like to use this in the evening as part of my evening cleanse. It feels very nurturing and provides my skin with great comfort, this cleanser leaves my skin lovely and hydrated and never stripped. It contains some lovely emollients which are perfect for drier skin types such as Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, and Squalane. It also contains soothing rose hip oil, argan and the brand's cult ingredient Spelt.

This cleanser also contains the Crystal Essences of fire opal, rose quartz, calcite, quartz, charoite, and rubelite. I am a great believer in crystal therapy and do believe that the vibrations of these gem stones works on the mind to relieves it of daily stress.

Dew Facial Wash

Whereas the Cleansing Lotion is great for drier skin types I would say this facial wash is great for oiler skin types. This facial wash is quite clarifying and I love to use this as my morning cleanser in the shower. It leaves the skin feeling very very clean. As this is a liquid foaming cleanser, to make it last the longer it is best to wet your hands, spray the facial wash into the palms and rub together to produce a lather, then massage the lather into the face and neck and then rinse. Due to this cleanser being clarifying in nature I did notice a slight decrease in pore size after using it each day for 4 months. This contains clarifying extracts of orange and lemon and essential oils of grapefruit and neroli giving the product a very citrusy fragrance.
This product has a beautiful blue colour which looks too good to be natural but it actually is 100% natural and is plant derived from gardenias.

This cleanser leaves my skin feeling super clean and ready for the next step in my routine. It's beautiful citrusy fragrance is highly refreshing and leaves my skin feeling really fresh.

Realive Serum

This is possibly my ultimate favourite from the AEOS line. It's a beautiful gel serum which is blue in colour and has floral notes from Lavender, Rose and Rose Geranium. It is very high in hyaluronic acid which can hold 1000 times its own weight in water. Hyaluronic acid boosts moisture in the skin and helps with moisture loss. Hyaluronic acid also has a plumping effect on fine lines and wrinkles which can make skin look more youthful. This is a wonderful serum and I love to use it at night which allows the skin to breathe.

This serum contains the crystal essences of opal, amethyst, charoite, turquoise, emerald, quartz, chrysoprase.

As this serum is of a gel like texture it is very refreshing to use and has a cooling and relaxing effect. It really quenches the skins thirst and absorbs instantly. I love how easily this absorbs, delivering many nutrients deep into the skin. My face feels so smooth almost like silk after use.

Enriching Moisturiser (Pink)

This is beautiful silky cream. It is light pink in colour and is rich in hydrating emollients such as Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Squalane, Spelt and Argan Oil. It has a gorgeous lemon sherbet type smell. I can pick the note of lemon myrtle oil as the most dominant note in this cream. The scent makes it very refreshing to use.

This cream is very easily absorbed, leaves a radiance sheen and infuses skin with the gorgeous scent. It is moisturising without leaving the skin feeling greasy. A little goes a long way and 50ml lasted me 4 months of using it once daily.

This moisturiser contains the Crystal Essences of fire opal, rose quartz, topaz, orange calcite, charoite, rubelite.

I like to use this cream as a day cream over the top of the Realive Serum. Both work in harmony together. The serum seems to combine with the cream taking it deeper into the skin, locking in moisture. The skin is left very supple and plump, feeling healthy and relaxed.

Overall

Overall I am deeply impressed with these four products from AEOS. I love the fact they are 100% natural, exceptionally rich in pure advanced organic ingredients, some products such as the Realive serum are raw and they all contain beautiful crystal essences. All these products are anti ageing, high end and luxurious. With long term use my complexion glows with radiance. It feels like these products are perfecting to the skin and feel very special. You can see there has been a lot of thought and hard work has gone into this beautiful range. Sure the products are on the pricy side however, with the pure and high percentages of organic ingredients combined with crystal essences and the results you get the prices are totally justifiable.

Bathing Beauty Anoint Facial Oil for Wise Skin review

Background info

Bathing Beauty is a natural skincare brand created by former model George Jones. George now lives in Wales and hand makes her own line of skincare and body products. Bathing Beauty contains lots of cold pressed oils and many of the products are raw. Many of the ingredients that George uses in Bathing Beauty are organic and wild crafted.

In terms of anti ageing Bathing Beauty is not as advanced as I'm used to but I am pleasantly surprised on just how pure and simple Bathing Beauty is. It is lovely to give the skin a nice rest from all these anti ageing actives and go back to basics especially during a detox. Bathing Beauty is SO ultimately pure and the line is comprised of some very beautiful products.

I can't believe just how good value for money everything is. If you are on a budget and looking for pure natural luxury then seriously look no further than Bathing Beauty. Just do not underestimate the products like I did, just because a product does not contain tons of ingredients doesn't mean it will not work, it could be that the ingredients it contains are super potent and more effective.

I am incredibly impressed with Bathing Beauty as they are unbelievably pure and the brand uses no cheap fillers, cheap oils, preservatives, stabilisers or emulsifiers and doesn't even use natural preservatives, in fact. The result is an incredibly fresh, pure and natural brand resulting in beautiful skin.

As George hand makes the products herself, it feels like the products have been made especially for you, giving a personal touch.

This review is for the gorgeous Anoint Facial Oil for Wise Skin - the brand's anti ageing facial oil.

Results and review

This Bathing Beauty face oil is considered to be the brand's anti ageing face oil. It is incredibly pure and it has the most exquisite rosy fragrance. The main note of the essential oils is the gorgeous rose absolute - Rosa Centifolia commonly known as the 'Cabbage' or 'Provence' rose. This is incredibly beautiful and after around half an hour of application the base note of Frankincense comes through. I really do find this face oil highly relaxing making it perfect for evening use.

Being a facial oil this is super concentrated and you only need a very small amount to moisture the skin. For those who are interested this oil is raw blended as the carrier oils are cold pressed. It is a beautiful golden colour (as seen below) and sinks into the skin easily.

Original packaging
This facial oil contains only seven but wonderful ingredients: The carrier oils of nourishing and repairing Olive oil, Sunflower oil, Borage oil and Avocado oil. The essential oils of Rose Absolute and Frankincense. And finally the super powerful and protective Vitamin E.

Olive Oil is an emollient oil which is is very beneficial for dry skin types because of its essential fatty acids content, namely squalene. Olive oil has many antioxidant benefits for the skin and has an anti inflammatory action when applied topically.

Sunflower oil is also an emollient oil. Sunflower oil helps repair the skin's barrier, reduces inflammation and absorbs into the skin quickly.

Borage Oil is a rich source of the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acids. Gamma linolenic acids help to produce healthy skin cells and acts as an anti inflammatory.

Avocado oil is a super vitamin rich oil which is high in antioxidants. Avocado helps to relieve dry skin and is super soothing and also repairing.

Rose Absolute and Frankincense essential oil infuse the skin with a beautiful scent as well as serving the skin with their therapeutic benefits.

The facial oil is stabilised with Vitamin E which helps to nourish and protect the skin from free radical damage.

I've really enjoyed using this gorgeous nourishing facial oil. It feels very pure and is ultra effective at getting rid of redness and irritation. My skin always feels plumped and incredibly moisturised. Whether you buy this for yourself or as a gift the lucky person using it I'm sure will love it and appreciate its purity. Once again truly impressed with this beauty from Bathing Beauty. 4/5 from me!

The instructions advise to the whisk gently over dry skin then rinse but I prefer to massage into damp skin as the salt particles dissolve resulting in a milder form of exfoliation. The oils in the scrub seem to glider better over the skin when it is damp.

Results and review

Let me start by telling you this award winning body scrub is perfect for those trying to achieve a gorgeously smooth summer body. I regularly get my arms waxed and this is perfect for preventing ingrown hairs and it's ultra moisturising formula with grape seed and olive oils helps to moisturise the skin as it buffs. This doubles up as a relaxing bath soak too. The sea salts contain many minerals which help to nourish the skin even further.

This body scrub has a highly refreshing and uplifting scent of zesty lemon and organically homegrown rosemary.

If you use it as I do then as you massage into damp skin the salt dissolves and the oils moisturise the skin. The scent leaves the skin smelling beautiful and perfectly moisturised, there is no need to follow with a body moisturiser/oil. The scrub has a gorgeous smooth yet grainy texture.

At 400grams for under £20 this an absolute bargain as it will last you months and months. I've been using this scrub since January and I have loads left.

I honestly cannot fault this beautifully pure body scrub, it could not be better. The price is right, it's pure, natural, organic, handmade, has a gorgeous zesty scent and the smooth results it gives your skin it's no wonder this body scrub is loved by many. 5/5 from me!

The Body Deli Creme de la Rose

Background info

The Body Deli is a relatively new brand to the UK. It was launched exclusively in the UK by my favourite Organic and Natural online skincare store a beautiful world in early 2014.

The Body Deli is a range of superfood skincare made in California, USA. The brand uses lots of seriously fresh organic raw superfoods and clinical actives to deeply nourish the skin. The products are hand made in small batches. The brand is loved by many celebrities. I am a lover of American Beauty brands but I would have to say that the Body Deli is possibly one of the best advanced organic/natural brands I've come cross from 'across the pond'.

Rose is one of my favourite ingredients of all time and I recently wrote about the benefits of using rose in skincare in my magazine column for the recently launched bodhi luxe magazine. To read about the benefits of rose please visit bodhi luxe Ingredient's corner Rose

This cream is one of my favourite organic creams that I've tried of late. I wanted to use it for a long time before reviewing to fully appreciate this product.

Product description

CREME DE LA ROSE is a luxurious rich and nourishing anti-aging facial moisturizer that is formulated to help accelerate cellular turnover, feed epidermal cells, restore elasticity and diminish the depth and intensity of wrinkles. BULGARIAN ROSE, COQ10 AND VITAMIN-A is used for its cell regenerating properties and exquisite healing aroma. GOJI BERRY extract is used for its amino acids and vitamin C content. For normal to dry skin types that are experiencing the effects of aging. Skin looks and feels younger with regular use. Enjoy the world’s finest facial cream.

WHY WE LOVE IT

CREME DE LA ROSE is our most popular product at Body Deli. It has become a cult beauty classic. Truly it is one of the most sensuous and delightful ultra-rich moisturizing creams available at any price. Each batch of CREME DE LA ROSE is handmade in small batches and takes over 24 hours to make. It is hand blended for over 3 hours to get the smooth as silk texture that delivers a refined and elegant skin feel.

Certified Organic Bulgarian Rose oil is one of our favorite ingredients that we use in CREME DE LA ROSE, at over 4000 dollars a pound it is our most expensive ingredient. Bulgarian Rose oil has been used for centuries for its exquisite aroma and its therapeutic healing and regenerating qualities. Did you know that pure distilled rose oil is the highest frequency biological substance?

Every living thing emits an electrical frequency which can be measured in megahertz; rose has a measured frequency of approximately 350 megahertz. The human body is measured between 62-78 megahertz. Rose in its purest form is a potent active ingredient to support cellular health.

Most of all CREME DE LA ROSE is luscious and delivers the complexion a more youthful and radiant appearance. It is the closest thing that we found to the fountain of youth in a jar.

Results and review

This beautiful anti ageing cream is thick, luxurious and whipped to perfection. It feels ultra concentrated and not greasy in the slightest. When you apply it to your face it gives a beautiful dewy and radiant glow. For me it does everything I want in an anti ageing cream, it's packed full of anti ageing ingredients such as Coenzyme Q10 and antioxidants (see product description for more details of the ingredients). Immediately after application my skin feels perfectly hydrated, calm and moisturised. It has an extremely silky texture and feels incredibly smooth on the skin making the perfect base for makeup.

The cream looks wonderful like frozen strawberry yogurt in a jar. My only slight disappointment was that with a name like creme de la Rose I was expecting this to be seriously rosy but it isn't, it has a nice scent but I wouldn't say it is rose. I can't quite put my finger on the scent but it is mild but very pleasant.

I like to use this as a day cream as I prefer using facial oils at night. This is perfect to apply underneath a sunscreen. A couple of times a week when I think my skin needs an extra boost I will use this as a night cream for extra hydration.

I would say this is perfect for all skin types, if you have oily skin you can use less and if you have dry skin you can use more. A little does goes a long way which is great.

This does not break me out and has leaves my skin looking plump and feeling firm. Due to the ingredients contained it helps to speed up cellular turnover, plump the skin, reduce the look of wrinkles and stimulate collagen production. It feels very special when using after a face scrub or mask.

I would say this cream is excellent value for money and it lasts a very long time. It is £65/$75 and although expensive I'm surprised this isn't more to be honest, you get what you pay for!

I've never come across such an advanced anti ageing cream which is raw and organic. An extremely well done to a beautiful world for finding this and bringing this conventional and amazing brand to the UK. I would repurchase in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a raw, organic and anti ageing face cream then I think this will be the perfect choice for you. A perfect 5/5!

Therapi Rose Otto Enriching Ultra Radiance Cream

Background info

There seems to be a buzz (excuse the pun) in the skincare industry at the moment around honey. Therapi launched late last year (2013) and is becoming increasingly popular. Therapi offers timeless organic skincare which is 100% natural and certified by the Soil Association.

Therapi focuses on the therapeutic benefits of honey, propolis and bioactive plant extracts to nourish the skin. Therapi's products feel like they are of exceptional quality.

Honey has been used for thousands of years and has recently become a trend in the beauty industry with many brands going back to basics by using amazing ingredients like honey. I lovely Therapi and would like to add that they give 5% of their profits to bee conservation projects which I think is amazing.

Therapi currently has three lines to suit different skin types:

Rose Otto - for normal to dry skin types
Orange Blossom - for normal skin types
Lemon Myrtle  - for oily to combination skin types

Results and review

This is a wonderful rich cream and has a luxurious texture which sinks in the skin beautifully. It is comparable to the Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream with the way it is scented and the way it feels on the skin. This is described as a treatment but is a moisturiser suitable for everyday use. If you have dehydrated dry skin this moisturiser will be perfect for you. It provides a lot of barrier protection with the use of bees wax and rich emollients like shea butter and coconut oil.

This moisturiser contains organic rose hip oil, honey, sunflower oil and aloe vera which all deeply hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. It also contains super anti ageing organic propolis extract which is a resinous material that is collected by bees and has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties on the skin. Propolis also enhances collagen production resulting in a more youthful complexion.

My skin looks beautifully radiant and glowy after use. Although rich it feels really soothing and helps with sensitive skin. During winter this was a god send for me as it really protects the skin against the cold weather and winds. You only need the smallest amount and it is super concentrated and it lasts ages. Earlier in the year I used this everyday during the cold weather and now the warmer weather is here I have started using it as a hydrating mask. It quenches my skin's thirst and I can feel my skin just drinking in this gorgeous moisturiser.

Whether you use this a daily moisturiser or a treatment it will give you gorgeous glowing skin. I think it is a star product of Therapi's. Even if you do not have dry skin you can still use this a treatment in the way you would use a hydrating mask, just don't wash it off. I prefer to use this during the day time so the hydrating effects last all day long. I find it best to apply to the skin after toning when skin is damp to make this concentrated moisturiser go even further.

This smells similar to the cleanser of the rose otto range, it smells lovely, sweet and floral and has organic rose otto and rose geranium essential oils to give it a delicious sweet rosey-honey scent.

The packaging is just stunning, I absolutely adore Therapis use of elegant packaging. The white glass adds a true sense of style and pureness.

I cannot fault this beautiful moisturiser. I urge anyone with dry skin types to try it. I can see why this is one of Therapi's best sellers. I am going to give it a 5/5 rating because this really works. I would definitely buy this moisturiser again.
