The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser

Background info

The Organic Pharmacy was the first organic skin care brand I ever used and bought into. I've always had a soft spot for Organic Pharmacy and it is a brand I always return to. Their products are high tech and very current. The Carrot Butter Cleanser is one of the brand's cult products and even celebrities like Kylie adore it. I've probably had about 6 jars of this over the years.

Product description

Cleansing is the most important part of maintaining and achieving beautiful skin. Without cleansed skin moisturisers and special treatments will not penetrate properly and dead skin is not removed. Carrot Butter Cleanser is a balm cleanser that melts on contact with the skin. It is infused with antioxidant Carrot and Calendula as well as decongesting Rosemary and soothing Lavender for a really deep but gentle cleanse. It removes eye make up as well as dirt and pollution. (Source:www.theorganicpharmacy.com).

Packaging

This cleanser is presented in a transparent plastic jar with silver lid and application spatula.

Application and texture

Instructions from the brand's website: Remove a small amount of cleanser with the spatula provided, rub the cleanser between clean hands and apply to dry skin, massaging it in well. Soak muslin or flannel in hand hot water and remove cleanser. Finish with a splash of cold water. (Do not use cotton wool as this will not remove the cleanser) The most essential cleanse should be carried out at night. If this is done properly, in the morning simply splash the face with water (Source:www.theorganicpharmacy.com).

This cleansing balm feels very thick with a waxy texture which melts upon skin contact. It has a beautiful orangey golden colour. It smells like Rosemary and Lavender.  I take out a clean fresh muslin cloth (over the years I've acquired many muslin cloths!) and remove the cleanser as per the above instructions, except I do not rinse with cold water but luke warm water.

Results and review

For those that love cleansing balms will love this cleanser. Being oil based it goes a very long way indeed. You have to remove this cleanser using a muslin cloth.

This cleanser is excellent to dissolve and remove makeup including eye makeup and mascara (so I've heard many women say in their reviews).

As with any cleanser it is best to take your time so you do not aggravate and cause inflammation to your skin. If you do not remove throughly you may be left with a oily film on your skin. It is absolutely essential when using this product to remove it completely as many water based products may fail to penetrate as deeply after use. To ensure this doesn't happen take your time in removing the cleanser and afterwards use a toner to remove any lasting residue.

I don't mind using bees wax in a cleanser as long as it emulsifies with water making it far easier to wash off. I also don't mind if its used as a thickener in a face cream (provided its not used as the primary ingredient) as bees wax does have some emollient properties. In some cleansers bees wax is used as the main ingredient which does cause me some concern, bees wax may prevent fantastic anti ageing ingredients in a serum or moisturiser from penetrating the skin. The amount of beeswax in this cleanser isn’t sufficient enough for this to be an issue, providing you remove it throughly/efficiently.

Apart from the bees wax this cleanser contains Sunflower seed oil which helps to hydrate the skin. Moisturising Jojoba and Sesame Seed oil both help to make dry skin feel and act better. Shea butter is high in antioxidants, helping to fight off free radicals. Cacao Butter has a rich source of antioxidant polyphenols which help to stimulate healthy collagen production. Olive oil is highly hydrating and has anti inflammatory properties. Carrot Oil also has a high concentration of antioxidants and vitamin A content which acts in a reparative nature. It also contains healing St Johns Wort, Calendula and Chamomile.

Overall this is very pleasant to use and feels like it takes the day off however, it is a bit more time consuming than using a facial wash. If you're a male reader and interested in this product I've found that this it is best to use on skin with little or no stubble as the cleanser may get trapped in the hairs. Although suggested for all skin types I feel it would be particularly benefical for dry skin types as the oils in the cleanser feel superbly moisturising.

Will I buy again? More than likely, I have done so six times since discovering The Organic Pharmacy in 2005. Although this is not a staple in my routine it does make for an excellent change to my usual cleansers.

    1. Hi Sarah,

Yes I think this would be perfect for your dry skin. It's quite similar to 100% Organic Cleansing Balm which I know you like.

  2. This sounds lovely, but the fact that it can leave a residue puts me off a little. x

    1. It is lovely. It's the same with any cleansing balm, if you don't remove it correctly it will leave a residue. This usually happens when you are in a rush but this is not a cleanser you can rush with.

  6. this cream seems to be able to double up as a cream as well - or is that too much due to the beeswax?

    1. Hello,

this is not a cream. It's a cleansing balm. Should you not remove the product properly this will leave a residue and although I wouldn't advise it, I guess you could get away with not applying a moisturiser afterwards. The skin feels nice and moisturised after using this. x
